Dimorphoteca Sinuata Sophisticated Cape Marigold Summer Flower

CAPE MARIGOLD
“Sophisticated marigolds” - that may be the most succinct way of describing Dimor-photeca sinuata. This South African species bears orange-yellow flowers, but has a far more expensive aura than the “cheap and cheerful” marigolds. Perhaps that is because of its stylish shape and its contrasting center. Or is it due to the satiny sheen on its petals? Whatever the reason, Cape marigolds add distinction and beauty to flower-beds and, above all, to containers adorning a smart patio or balcony.
The plants, about 12 in tall, like airy warmth, with their foliage and flowers enjoying a refreshing wind, and their roots preferring loose, warm soil. The plants are on sale at container plant specialists from May onwards. You will have a choice of soft shades ranging from orange to white by way of yellow, often with a contrasting ring round the center. In less favorable climates, the plants open only to their fullest extent in full sun. They close up again at night.
It is quite feasible to grow Cape marigolds from seed yourself: start under glass in March-April if you want them in flower by the end of June. Sowing outdoors in April-May will ensure flowers between July and September.
The seed is often sold as a mixture. The almost white flowers of Dimorphoteca sinuata ‘Salmon’ have an added tinge of salmon pink and an aubergine-colored ring round the center. For more plants closely resembling Dimorphoteca sinuata see Osteospermum.
