Asarina Erubescens Climbing Gloxinia Pink Flowers

CLIMBING GLOXINIA
Fresh pink flowers, each one up to 3 in long, are formed at the tips of the climbing stems of Asarina rubescens throughout the summer. The Mexican climber itself will grow as tall as the support you provide for it - up to 12 ft in a single season.
Put the plant in a warm and sheltered position in nutritive soil or in a large pot and give it plenty of water, because there is considerable evaporation from the surface of the large downy leaves. As long as the soil remains sufficiently damp, the climbing gloxinia may be in full sun, but if there is some shade during the hottest part of the day, the risk of the plant drying out in a pot is reduced. In Mexico, Asarina is a perennial. In colder climates, it may be overwintered indoors in a frost-free and light position, but annual cultivation is infinitely preferable. The plant is self-pollinating and produces spherical fruit containing winged seeds in late summer. Sow indoors as early as February-March, because the seedlings need about 4 months to come into flower. Flowering plants are on sale from May.
