Residential Design Small Space Garden Landscaping

Small Space Gardening
The need for more living space in city dwellings has forced residential designs to maximize floor area at the expense of less important space such as the garden. Gone are the days when huge lawns filled the outdoor areas of residences. Nowadays, we have to make the most out of whatever space is left for landscaping. A well-planned pocket garden, anywhere from 10 to 15 square meters, can meet our needs by following these guidelines:
1. Choose your plants well.
Choose plants that do not crowd spaces that are used as pathways and sitting areas. Choose plants that are columnar (narrow and vertical) in nature or those that respond well to pruning and shaping. Flowering vines are also great choice. Do not omit trees either because they provide shade but make sure that you buy the mature ones. Since small gardens limit the number of plants you can grow, make sure that the plants you choose are the ones that you really like.
2. Provide sitting areas.
A garden bench is a more practical choice compared to the luxury of having a complete set of outdoor furniture. You can construct plant boxes that can double as makeshift sitting areas.
3. Pave your garden.
Hardscape materials like tiles, concrete pavers and pebbles are better for small space gardening because they are low in maintenance.
4. Accessorize your garden.
Choose garden ornaments that reflect your personality, simple things that will invite you to linger a little bit more.
5. Re-invent your ideas.
If you have a paved indoor garden but due to lack of space and sunlight, to convert it into a pond is a much better and wiser choice. The house will be much cooler due to the continuous evaporation of water.
