A garden bench is an inviting piece of furniture. It encourages you to lounge in your garden and savor the relaxing atmosphere. It is also a nice sitting area when family and friends visit. Garden benches have a special place in our hearts due to the special moments spent sitting on it with our loved ones and special someone.

Place your garden benches some distance from your home if possible but within view. This way, the bench will be calling out to you to take a walk, sit down, relax and enjoy the view. A good tip to remember is it is not where the bench looks good, but what looks good when sitting on your bench.

Garden benches come in a variety of color, material and design. Do not be overwhelmed by the wide array of choices. The type of bench you choose is a matter of taste, although when selecting your bench, consider practicality as well as being an ornamental garden feature.

Wood benches are made from hardwood like teak, redwood, mahogany or cedar. These benches can stay outside all year round although they are not rot-resistant and will turn silver-gray in color if they are left unattended. Wash your wood garden benches once a year with mild soap and a bit of bleach. You can also apply sealants to prevent water from seeping into your furniture. Benches made from pressure-treated wood are another option. Painted benches made from wood should remain inside or under cover.

Metal garden benches can be cast, tubular aluminum or wrought iron. Wrought iron benches are nice but they will rust if exposed in the outdoors. They can be used in enclosed patios and decks. Cast aluminum benches are poured into molds and can simulate wood or wrought iron. Aluminum benches can come in different colors and antique finishes. The paint is baked on for durability and these benches can easily be cleaned with soap and water.

Benches made from carved stone, stone slabs and cast stone require no maintenance other than an occasional dusting of debris. These are great for the outdoors as they can withstand the harsh elements.

Wicker and rattan settees and benches are also great but save them for covered porches or inside because they are not weather-resistant. There are All-weather wicker benches that are made from woven synthetics on an aluminum frame which can be place outside.

Plastic and resin benches are also available. They are lightweight and can be easily washed with soap and water. Don’t expose then outside for too long as this will make them brittle.
