Not like in the tropical countries that it is always good to plant summer flower plants any time of the year. To the countries that has 3 or 4 seasons, summer is the best time of the year for a gardener and also the busiest time too. You can see and experience the beauty of abundance of life in the garden. During summer, gardeners take necessary care and maintain the health of the plants in the garden. So here are some of the tips that you should do during the summer season to help you prioritize your workload.
Indoor Garden: Early summer is the ideal time to plant containers, such as patio pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. I’m very sure that frost has alreay melted and passed along with the spring so the containers can be put outside. But as the summer progresses, you must not forget to feed container-bound plants.
Pest Patrol: You must be vigilant and watch for pest in your garden. If you see signs of pest then take action before it problem spreads out of control. On roses especially, keep an eye out for aphids and mildew. Keep the deer, rabbits and other big pests away from your garden and apply necessary things to keep them away.
Watering: Summer time is a hot and you must keep up with your watering. You must water deeply to keep the roots deeper because if water isn”t enough then the roots will stay near the surface and is prone to the heat.
Dead-heading: This is also listed as a spring chore, but you should continue to dead-head flowers that have passed throughout the summer (this increases bloom time and strengthens the plant). Pay special attention to dead-heading flowers that self-seed once they have passed so that you maintain control over where they spread in your garden. If you want to propagate certain plants, you can save the flower heads for planting at a later date.
Vegetables: Time to get those tomatoes and other frost sensitive plants in the ground! Know the frost date for your area (check with your local extension service) and as soon as it’s safe, get things started. More time in the ground means bigger and quicker harvests.
Plant Bulbs: Mid-summer is the time to plant bulbs that will bloom in the fall, such as colchicum. Wait for late summer to plant bulbs that will bloom in the spring.
Sow Annuals: Summer time is the perfect time to sow hardy annuals, such as lupines, outdoors in the garden. You can also sow biennials, such as forget-me-nots. These hardy plants are easy to grow outdoors from seed. Actually there are plenty of activities and chores that you can do in your garden during summer time. But don”t forget to sit back, relax and enjoy the joys of summer in your garden.
