Long-blooming and Long-lived Perennials

Perennials are herbaceous plants that come back year after year and some even becomes a permanent fixture in your garden. Some examples of perennials that are long-lived are peony, hosta, bearded iris, Siberian iris, daylily, hellebore, euphoria, red-hot poker or torch lily, monkshood, bugbane, gas plant, balloon flower, balloon flower, false indigo, lily-of-the-Nile, astilbe, purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, Helianthus, butterfly weed, goldenrod, bee balm, goatsbeard, ironweed, Joe-pye weed, sneezeweed, sedum and trillium.
Most perennials bloom for only one week but some do bloom for up to three weeks while some will repeat-bloom later in the season. Some of these long-blooming perennials are black-eyed Susan, veronica, guara, purple coneflower, Russian sage, some daylilies, salvia, lanceleaf coreopis, boltonia, hibiscus, caryopteris, garden phlox, sedum and Japanese anemones. Looking for particular cultivars of these species promises an even extended blooming period. Do not hesitate to experiment with the plants because who knows, you can find some additional plants that will do very well in your garden.
